The wines: Sourced from Napa areas stretching from the Carneros district in the south to Calistoga in the north, Rombauer produces 60,000 cases a year, with the lion's share an oaky, fruit-forward 2007 Carneros Chardonnay ($32). Their winemaker is Gregory Graham, himself a winery owner. (Koerner III) and Sheana, handle the winery's sales and public relations. Joan Rombauer has died, but the children, K.C. The couple soon became involved in wineries and, in 1982, started producing their own wines. He and his wife, Joan, both Southern Californians, moved to the valley in the early 1970s to raise their children in an agricultural setting. The team: Koerner Rombauer, a captain for Braniff Airlines for many years and an antique car collector, traces his family roots and wine-making tradition to the German Rheingau wine region. Like a family museum, wall displays chronicle the owner's eclectic career and - like a celebrity bar - show photos and autographs of dozens of actors, astronauts and other notables he counts among his friends. Antique benches invite lingering on a covered porch after you have visited the intimate visitors room with its three tasting/sales counters. An opening in the pine trees reveals the crest of the Mayacamas Mountains on the opposite side of the valley. The vibe: A narrow road meanders 1/4 mile into the hills, where a smallish parking area adjoins a low-slung stone building. The Rombauer winery's charming, off-road setting, informal landscaping, good wine and relaxed hospitality make for a lovely Napa experience. ![]()
